PERFORMANCE

Performance = 10% genetics + 20% training + 80% nutrition
What does that really mean??!
1. 10% genetics
a. This means I have to stop whining about Pat Vellner’s genetic advantage over me. And I can also stop blaming my gene pool and get my ass in gear. It’s only a small part of the big picture. But, thanks Mom & Dad, for my awesome 10%.
2. 20% training
a. This 20% I have control over, and it’s twice as important as what I don’t have control over i.e. my gene pool. This is good news!
3. 80% what I choose to put in my mouth
a. Again, I control this. 80% is a large piece of the pie. That’s significant! I’ve tested several nutritional philosophies and what I discovered is this: nutrition matters. A LOT.
Performance is important to me. I’ve performed well and not so well. The determining factor? Not genetics, not training. Without a doubt is how on point my nutrition has been. I have an advantage over you for sure. I have RA. Believe me, it’s a motivating factor that gives me an advantage. Nutrition plays such a large role in managing inflammation. Even if you don’t have RA this is something to pay attention to. I’m of the thought that much of today’s joint and body pain is the result of unnecessary inflammation due to diet.
What nutritional philosophy is best for you is for you to determine. What’s for sure is that you need one and you need to be consistent with it for it to work. In my opinion and experience that means 5-6 months.
Start here:
Step 1 is to eat real food, all the time. Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. Avoid processed and packaged foods. Start slowly with small changes. As you become metabolically more efficient, you will notice changes in physical appearance as well as performance.
Step 2 is getting the right amount of fuel. Under eating is just as bad as over-eating. Everyone is unique, but tracking macros is the best way to ensure you’re getting the right amounts of carbohydrates, protein and fat. If you’ve never tracked your macros, start with 40 percent carbs, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat.
Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.
